A variety of materials can be used to manufacture flange gaskets, depending on where and how they will be installed.

The most common type of flanges is made from elastomeric substances, including rubber, polyethylene, and similar synthetic materials.

Elastomeric flange gaskets are a cost-effective option for general applications.

To replace fibrous materials (asbestos), specific products such as fiberglass, carbon fiber, graphite, vermiculite, asbestos-free joints, and other alternatives have been introduced.

These fibrous flange gaskets are highly resistant to fire, heat, and corrosion, but they may be more expensive than elastomeric models. Graphite and vermiculite gaskets can also be used for special applications.
